Eye examinations

At Robert Ellin Opticians, eye examinations are deliberately different.

We allow 45 minutes for every eye examination, and all assessments — including pre-screening — are carried out by a qualified Optometrist, not delegated to automated processes or non-clinical staff.

This gives us the time and clinical oversight needed to deliver truly personalised, thorough eye care.

  • Our standard eye examination is suitable for patients who want a routine check of their vision and eye health.

    Your 45-minute appointment includes:

    • A detailed vision assessment

    • Full eye health checks

    • Pre-screening and testing carried out by an Optometrist

    • Clear explanation of findings and recommendations

Because we don’t rush appointments, we can explore changes properly and answer any questions you may have.

  • OCT is a quick, non-invasive scan that allows us to examine the retina and optic nerve in exceptional detail.

It helps detect and monitor early signs of eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease - often before symptoms are noticeable.

The scan is painless, takes only a few minutes, and is reviewed and explained by your Optometrist during your 45-minute, clinician-led appointment.

OCT is included as part of our Comprehensive Eye Health Examination and is available as an optional addition to NHS eye examinations where appropriate.

If you’re unsure whether OCT is right for you, our team will be happy to advise.

  • Our Comprehensive Eye Health Examination is our most detailed assessment and is designed for patients who want the highest level of eye care.

This includes everything in a private eye examination, plus advanced diagnostic imaging, such as:

    • OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) — a detailed scan of the retina and optic nerve

    • Digital retinal imaging

    • Enhanced monitoring for early signs of eye disease

OCT allows us to detect subtle changes before symptoms develop, supporting earlier diagnosis and long-term monitoring.

This examination is particularly recommended if you:

    • Are over 40

    • Have a family history of eye disease

    • Have diabetes or high blood pressure

    • Want proactive, preventative eye care

    • Value extended, clinician-led appointments
